1925-The cotton market is on in Sulphur Springs with the square crowded with buyers from day to day, who are after the cotton as fast as it comes in. There were 98 bales received Wednesday, most of which sold for around 25 cents. Cotton seed are quoted at $40.00 per ton at the oil mill. Up to Wednesday night there had been received by wagon 264 bales of cotton. And, There are 75,000 bales of short staple cotton now in Bermen Germany, for which there is absolutely no market.
1936-Elmer Skinner and Shorty Parker are now managers of the Magnolia Service Station on Jefferson Street. In addition to a complete supply of gas and lube, etc, they will operate a well-equipped repair department.
1944-Brodie Koon, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Koon, of Bonanza, received top honors at the FFA Officers' Training School held in Kerrville last week. Young Koon had the honor of being rated the Star Lone Star Farmer of the State of Texas, and as the holder of this coveted title will be eligible to compete with FFA members of the Southern Region for the highest rating in that area, which is composed of eleven states.
1954-An entomologist from the Extension Service at Texas A & M College this week found Hopkins County corn to be rather heavily infested with the Southwestern cornstalk borer and has advised farmers to destroy their cornstalks as a means of controlling the costly pest. The county's most heavily infested corn was found in the Pine Forest area, where infestation climbed as high as 90 per cent. Average for the county as a whole was about 30 percent. Corn growers were strongly urged to burn their cornstalks as soon as they finish gathering their crops.
1975-It was announced that the Cooper Dam would be completed in 1981, according to word released from Senator Loyd Bensten's office. Bentsen had made a brief stop in both Sulphur Springs and Cooper to announce the particulars on the project.
1985-B.F. Ashcroft, president of the Coca-Cola plant in Sulphur Springs, shows a can of the New old coke--or is it the old new Coke? Well, its the old Cake in a new can with a new name, Coca-Cola classic. Ashcroft said the firm brought the original Coke formula back due to public demand.
