THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
1921-Jim K. Polk King, a pioneer citizen of Hopkins County, died July 1st, at the ripe age of 80 years old. The remanis were buried at Sherley.
He is survived by one son, Jim King, his wife and six children having died several years ago. His old time friend S.W. Key together with Rev. Humphries conducted the funeral at the Sherley Church. He had been an active mamber of the Missionary Baptist Church since 1865. And, Mr. and Mrs. O.K. Ellison of Sulphur Bluff lost their one year old son the first of the week after a few days illness with malaria.
1932-Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Crump wish to thank those who worked out their crop. Mrs. Crump has been sick for some time. Twenty three hoe hands and ten cultivators finished the task. Those who worked were; James McGlamory, wife and son, Mr. and Mrs. Mack Orr, Mr. and Mrs. Ticer Mercer, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Nabors and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Bradley and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Formby, Bob and Ed McGlamory, Travis Moselay, Mr. Terrell and son, Avon Braden, Morris Hayden, Mr. Livingston and daughter, Bud Rose, Murray McGlamory, Jack Bradley, Robert Orr, Mrs. M.E. McGlamory, Dessa McGlamory, Mrs. Myra Simms, Starlin Sparks, Warner McGlamory, wife and son.
1954-.The potential effect that a general alarm fire in the city might have under the present critical water shortage, brought an urgent appeal for cooperation in an emergency from Fire Chief Burke McCool. McCool requested all citizens to turn off all unessential watering if the alarm is sounded between the hours of 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. City Manager Roy Hames said that the general alarm siren atop the fire station was sufficient in pitch and intensity to be heard in almost any area of the city.
1959-Craver Bros. was advertising "Hotpoint" home freezers. After a small down payment, you could have "the finest quality freezer made," for a low weekly payment of just $3.00. And, Carothers Bros. advertised their entire stock of "Jarmen" loafers for $8.00.
